'Love Food Love Preston - World Record Attempt 2015'

'Proud Prestonians flocked to the city centre this weekend to take part in a bizarre world record attempt as a campaign to profile the city’s eateries was launched. Preston City Centre Business Improvement District (BID) invited people to the Flag Market to take on the challenge of eating 41 parched peas in 30 seconds using a cocktail stick and propel themselves into the Guinness World Record books. Sadly, the record – once held by Preston’s own Andrew ‘Freddie’ Flintoff – was not brought back to Lancashire, but the event helped to officially launch the Love Food Love Preston campaign in the city. About 100 people of all ages attempted the record, including a police officer and even comic book characters such as The Joker and Dr Who! But it was restaurant owner and chef Andrea Mellon, from Duk Pond in Cross Street, who came closest to breaking the record, but despite her valiant effort she only managed to eat 30 peas. Andrea said: “We had a fabulous time on the Flag Market. We didn’t actually break the record but we had a very good try. “Events like this are extremely important for Preston to bring people into the city centre to just let them know what is going on and to get that community involvement.”'
