Any time your little one is awake, it should only be from 1.5 – 3 hours. That’s all your 6 month old baby can really handle! What we find when we really stick to the awake times is that your baby will fall asleep quicker and easier! Nap Tips: Your 6 month old baby will take 2-3 naps/day. The first 2 naps of the day should be about an hour or more. Then the third nap of the day is usually a catnap – anywhere from 20-40 minutes in the late afternoon. By 9 months old, your baby is going to drop that catnap and settle into two consistent naps. Bedtime for a 6 Month Old Baby Bedtime for your 6 month old baby will be anytime from 7pm – 8: 30 pm. Night Sleep Your 6 month old baby will sleep anywhere from 11-12 hours at night. Night feedings for your 6 month old baby: We can expect a 6 month old to have 1-2 night feeds, depending on your individual baby’s weight gain and growth history. A lot of 6 month olds can be weaned down to 1 night feed. Some can go ALL night long! It just depends on your individual baby. Total sleep in 24 hours for a 6 month old baby: 14-15 hours or even up to 16 hours.14 hours is the minimum for 6 month olds. So, you put your little one down at bedtime. They might even fall asleep quite easily. But then they’re up within an hour of bedtime! Or they’re up really frequently after bedtime. When a parent reaches out to me and says that their baby is waking really often after bedtime, I tell them that we need to talk about two things. 1. Is she falling asleep on her own at bedtime? 2. What are her awake times like? Is she overtired? Cause #1: Your little one might be too drowsy when you put her in bed. So what we try to do with babies and toddlers when they’re ready to start sleeping long stretches at night, is we need to work on getting them falling asleep on their own. Practice putting your baby down in the crib drowsy but awake The way that we do that is we put them down in their bed drowsy but awake. They’re on their way to falling asleep – but they’re not yet there. Their eyes are still open. They are in a relaxed state – that’s the purpose of the Peaceful Nightly Ritual. Your baby is in a nice, relaxed state. But her eyes are open and she’s aware of what’s going on. Then you put her in her bed, to fall asleep on her own. That way, when she stirs in the night, she knows exactly where she is. And she knows exactly how to fall back asleep, because that’s what she did at bedtime. Cause # 2: Awake times and overtiredness Normally when we work with awake times, I give you guys a range. You have 2 options for using the awake times. First Option: One Set Awake Time If I say your baby needs to sleep every 2-3 hours, you can say, “OK, she’s going to sleep every 2.5 hours”. To keep things easy! You can choose 2.5 hours as your awake time and stick with it throughout the whole day. Every 2.5 hours, you’re going to make sure she gets down for a sleep. Second Option: Staggered Approach to Awake Times If you’re able to pay a little bit more attention to it – if you’re home with baby all day or if you’re really organized – then what can often work really well is to do a staggered approach to awake times. The first awake time of the day is usually the shortest, which is pretty counterintuitive! Each awake time would be slightly longer, with the last awake time of the day being the longest. • Awake time 1: 1.5-2 hours • Awake time 2 and 3: 2-2.5 hours • Awake time 4: 3 hours max – at the 3 hour mark, your baby is asleep The next step: Your baby falls asleep on their own Ideally, we want to get your little one falling asleep on her own. And even without you in the room! THAT is what’s going to set her up to sleep longer stretches at night, and eventually sleep through the night.'
