'Georgia has a rich cultural heritage and boasts a wealth of traditional food products. This is Georgia’s famous Sulguni cheese. Nearly every household in the Samegrelo region makes this cheese. Another unique Georgian cheese is the Tushetian Guda. It has been made in the Caucasus mountain pastures since generations. These cheese producers are using geographical indications (GI). A GI is a label used on goods that have a specific geographical origin, highlighting their unique local features, history or distinctive characteristics. For consumers, this label means authenticity and quality. GIs help secure higher incomes for small-scale producers, revitalize local economies, preserve biodiversity and local know-how. By linking people, places and products, GIs can help keep food traditions alive.
