'The key term SHAPING applies here. The trainer rewards behaviors that gradually get closer to the finally desired behavior. The technique is also called instrumental conditioning or Skinnerian conditioning -- after B.F. Skinner -- who described it. In this case a CLICKER is used prior to presenting the technique. Thus the cat gets QUICKER feedback about the correctness of the behavior performed and learns to EXPECT the positive reinforcer of food -- which is coming quickly too.'
