'Comparing Food Mills, Making Apple Sauce After being so excited to get my new food mill, I broke out the tools to make some applesauce. And it dawned on me, I already own a food mill! This old conical version. After using both, each has its pros and cons. Overall I like the Foley mill better. The conical mill did seem to press out the sauce faster, having a great surface area. However it ends up packing debris in the bottom, and does not have a scraper on the outside to keep the outside clean, so once done it has to be cleaned with a spatula. It also gets debris stuck on the sides which eventually will block off your surface area. The Foley does great at keeping itself clean with the reverse option and the external scraper on the bottom. However the Foley will get stuff stuck above the reach of the blade as well, and requires assistance every so often pushing material down. If I had to boil it down to one key component I\'d say it\'s the self cleaning of the Foley that I prefer. It can be messy, and a lot of material can get lost trying to clean out the conical mill. No worries, I\'ll keep both. Hopefully in just a few more years, it won\'t be me running them anyway, but rather the kids : )'
