'#microplastics #kpassionate #shorts How do microplastics work their way up the food chain? Through a process called biological magnification. See the full video here → https://youtu.be/3b0jIWpneuY Biological magnification is the process whereby substances work their way up the food chain in progressively greater concentrations. When predatory animals feed, they not only consume the prey but also all of the toxic chemicals within said prey. What if a small fish, like an anchovy or herring, consume ten zooplankton during a single feed? If the zooplankton ate an average of 1 microplastic, which they likely consume far more, then that anchovy now has 10 pieces of plastic in their system. What if bigger fish like salmon and tuna then consume 10 anchovies? The salmon now have 100 pieces of plastic in their system. This process magnifies all the way up the food chain to animals like eagles, orcas, and humans where concentrations of the microplastics can reach dangerous levels. A recent study found that our ocean’s most massive animals also consume massive amounts of microplastics. The study focused on baleen whales. Specifically blue, fin and humpback whales. It found that humpback whales consume over 200,000 plastics daily. And blue whales eat up to 10 million pieces of microplastic every single day. That’s a 60 inch flat screen TV worth of plastic. https://news.stanford.edu/2022/11/01/whales-eat-colossal-amounts-microplastics/ Music by Cody Martin - soundstripe.com Wildlife Footage markoconnell - soundstripe.com felixmizioznikov - soundstripe.com vasttt - soundstripe.com Join the KPassionate channel to learn more about marine mammals and gain access to perks: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCUvSqEH92Fqn9uw1kmCfLGA/join --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Check out our Patreon to support the KPassionate channel!
